Most Retaining Walls Fail Because of What You Cannot See

The wall isn't the hard part. Drainage, footings, and engineering are what separate a 25-year wall from one that bows out in three winters.

Bad Drainage

Without an ag-line behind the wall, water builds up and pushes the wall forward. You see it bowing in year three. By year five it's failing.

Shallow Footings

Posts dug to 600mm instead of engineered depth. They hold for a year or two until a wet winter shifts the soil and the whole wall starts leaning.

No Engineering

Walls over a metre legally need engineering. Skipping it saves a few hundred dollars upfront and costs tens of thousands when the wall fails or council demands it be rebuilt.

Josh on site

Josh is a Licensed Builder Who Specialises in Retaining Walls

Josh started Adelaide Hills Retaining Wall Specialists after 15 years building homes. He kept seeing the same retaining wall failures from cheaper operators — so he started doing them himself, properly engineered, with the same standards as a house slab. Every wall has engineered footings, drainage, and a fixed-price contract. Josh is on every site, every day.

  • Engineer-certified for walls over 1m
  • Fixed-price contract before work starts
  • 25-year structural guarantee in writing

What Adelaide Hills Homeowners Say

★★★★★

"Josh was straight with us about what the site actually needed instead of just telling us what we wanted to hear. The wall has been through two winters now with no movement at all."

— Sarah M., Doncaster
★★★★★

"We had two cheaper quotes. Josh was the only one who mentioned drainage. After seeing what happened to our neighbour's wall, that turned out to be the whole thing."

— David T., Templestowe
★★★★★

"Turned up when he said he would, did what he said he would do, and cleaned up after himself. Sounds basic but it is not what we got from the last two trades."

— Priya R., Balwyn North

Questions homeowners ask before they commit

How much does a retaining wall actually cost?

It depends on length, height and access, but most of our jobs land between $20,000 and $50,000. Fill in the form and we will give you a ballpark before anyone comes out to the site.

Do I need council approval?

Generally anything over a metre needs approval, and some councils are stricter than others. We will tell you where you stand before you spend anything on drawings.

Why is your quote higher than the landscaper down the road?

Because the part that fails is the part you cannot see. Post depth, drainage and backfill are where the money goes, and they are the first things cut to win a job on price.

How long will the wall last?

Built properly, decades. Built badly, you will see movement in the first few wet winters. That is the whole reason engineering and drainage matter.

Do you handle the engineering?

Yes. Soil report, engineering and certification are all organised for you, so you are not chasing three different trades to get one wall built.

What happens after I fill in the form?

Josh calls you, talks through the site, and gives you a ballpark figure. If it stacks up for both of us, he comes out and measures properly.
